The Coton de Tulear originates from the Island of Madagascar. The Coton de Tulear was the companion dog of the Merina (ruling tribe) in Madagascar. Malagasy royalty were the only people allowed to keep Cotons.
The Coton is a Bichon dog type possibly Bichon Tenerife and Tererife Terrier. The Coton de Tulear has beautiful hair that feels like cotton. Cotons are affectionate dogs that are playful, intelligent and they love people. Males average in size from 10 to 14 pounds, females average in size from 8 to 12 pounds. The normal lifespan for Cotons is between 14 and 16 years. Most health issues are rare as the Coton is a healthy breed compared to other breeds of dog.
Coton de Tulear breeders who are passionate about the Coton de Tulear breed belong to one or more of the reputable Coton breed clubs. In the USA the reputable breed clubs I recommend are the American Coton Club (ACC), American Association of the Coton de Tulear (AACDT), United States of America Coton de Tulear Club (USACTC) and the North American Coton Association (NACA).
Code of Ethic breeders who belong to the reputable Coton de Tulear breed clubs set high standards to preserve, honor and protect the Coton de Tulear breed from exploitation and careless breeding practices. Code of Ethic breeders have an obligation to protect the health and welfare of the Coton de Tulear breed. Most COE breeders screen their Cotons using available health tests and results are made public on the OFFA and CERF websites. COE breeders stay informed of all health and genetic issues related to the Coton de Tulear breed. COE breeders only breed together Coton de Tulear dogs. Our Cotons will never be bred to mixed breed dogs or other pure bred breeds of dog. COE breeders will never place a Coton for resale to a pet store, dealer, broker, wholesaler, puppymill or backyard breeder. Please support COE breeders.
